Referral Traffic
Visitors who come to your site by clicking a link on another website, rather than from a search engine.
Definition
Referral traffic is the segment of your web traffic that arrives via inbound links from other domains. When a user clicks a link to your startup on Product Hunt, Hacker News, or a blog post, they are counted as referral traffic in your analytics platform.
While the primary reason to submit to directories is SEO (building domain authority), high-tier directories also generate significant referral traffic. Tier 1 platforms like Product Hunt can drive thousands of referral visitors in a single day, leading to immediate signups and feedback. Tier 2 and Tier 3 directories might only drive a few referral visitors per month, but because they are highly targeted, the conversion rate is often much higher than organic search traffic.
Example
If 500 people click the link on your BetaList profile and land on your website, your analytics dashboard will show 500 sessions attributed to 'Referral' with BetaList as the source.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The vast majority of smaller, low-DR directories will drive zero referral traffic. Users do not browse random directories looking for software. However, high-engagement platforms (Product Hunt, AppSumo, specific niche curations) drive massive amounts of referral traffic.
